10 Household Chores Suitable for a 10 Year Old
My son is now 10 and as country folk would say back in the day, he needs to “earn his keep”. LOL! I’m just kidding, however, I am looking forward to the many lessons and wealth of knowledge that he’ll obtain in this next decade of his life. One of them being earning and positive learned behavior with money.
There is no six figure degree that can teach proper money management. See, people have a habit of assuming that someone who has a well paying job, has plenty of money in the bank and an ample amount of disposable income. That of course, couldn’t be any further from the truth. In fact, according to research linked here, 18% of earners making above $100,000 a year, live check to check.
It is my personal belief that the proper money management is built on behavior and that behavior is often established at a young age. The earlier one begins to learn about best practices about money management, the better.
That unfortunately, was not my experience and often times when I mention “breaking generational curses” I’m referring to my experience with money. What I was taught- nothing. And the mistakes I’ve made, I’m paying for till this day. However, I want to change this for my family.
So when my son came to me asking about a $130 action figure, I started serious conversations with him about money. I provided him with a few concepts and we’ve established a list of chores that he can and will complete in order to earn money for the things he desires.
So he’s gotten his account setup and some basic terms that we’ve gone over are
Need– a requirement, necessary duty, or obligation:
Want– to have a strong desire for
Now that he’s got a good handle on these terms, he’s not so quick to ask for a Starbucks Very Berry Refresher at Starbucks. This is especially when I tell him he has to use his own money. He always reminds himself out loud that he really doesn’t need it.
Here are some household chores that he does around the house in order to earn money.
- Wash dishes
- Take out the trash
- Vacuum
- Wipe down his door and baseboards around his door
- Wiping down windows
- Straighten up the living room every night before bed
- Separate his clothes and load them into the washer
- Sweep his bathroom
- Wipe down counter and mirror in bathrooms
- Clean out utensil drawer
Each chore he can easily maintain and I’ve set realistic expectations so that they foster positive lessons and experiences for him and our household.
What kind of chores do you have for your child?
